Memory: what the AI keeps about you

Memory is how the AI stops asking the same questions. It is a list of facts about you, your preferences and your work, and it goes with every chat to the provider of the model you use. You decide what is on it.

Add a memory

Say it in a chat: remember that I fly out of Chicago and prefer aisle seats. The AI asks before it saves, unless Auto is on. You can keep up to 500 memories of up to 300 characters each.

The AI may also save a lasting fact it notices in an ordinary chat. When a reply read a web page or a file, it only suggests the fact instead, so a page can never slip a memory in behind your back.

Review what it suggests

Open Settings → Memory. Under Suggested, each fact has Save and Dismiss, and nothing there is remembered until you save it. Learn from gives the AI more to suggest from:

Browsing habits: read on your computer; nothing is sent anywhere.
My chats: your messages in recent chats go to the model you picked, to suggest facts about you.
Import a file… and Import chats… from exports you already have.
Bring from another AI…: copy a prompt into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, paste its answer back, and keep only the facts you tick.

Where each memory lives

Each memory has a chip with two choices:

Cloud: kept in your Minda account and shared with Minda on your other computers and with Minda SI for Chrome.
This device only: never leaves this computer.

Not signed in? Everything stays on this computer until you sign in.

Forget

The trash button, Forget this, drops one memory. Forget everything clears them all, and your other computers drop them at their next sync. You can also say forget that I prefer aisle seats in a chat.

Chats with no memory

A Temporary chat (the ghost button at the top of the full-page chat) is not saved, and the AI won't use or change its memory. Chats in a private window are always temporary.
Keep AI on this computer in Settings → AI means only models running in Ollama on your computer answer. Cloud models and Minda AI are off, and nothing is sent to them.

Standing instructions for files

Put a file named MINDA.md in your AI files folder and it becomes the AI's standing instructions for that folder. The AI reads it and can never change it.

A tip: memory works best for facts that stay true, such as your role, your time zone and the tone you like. Keep passwords, card numbers and one-off details out of it.
